What the flag of Haiti means
Haiti's first flag was made in 1803, when Jean-Jacques Dessalines tore the white out of the French tricolour, leaving blue and red to stand for the union of Black and mixed-race Haitians. The coat of arms shows a royal palm, cannons and the motto L'union fait la force, Unity makes strength.
